If you know me, you know that I love collections. For several years I have wanted to paint all 50 State Birds & Flowers. I wanted to honor the people & places I visit. I used to think that the State Birds were selected near the time when the states were founded, not so. The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), a national network of women’s civic groups, pushed for conservation and education initiatives. Around the 1920s, the GFWC lobbied for selections that highlighted local wildlife and fostered environmental awareness. These women teamed up with ornithologists and schools to promote state bird campaigns, encouraging states to pick species that were both iconic and in need of protection. So, here's to the ladies who made that happen!
